Преп. Вукол бил ученик на св. ап. Йоан Богослов, който го посветил за епископ на гр. Смирна. В Смирна тогава имало малко покръстени, но сред всички св. Вукол се отличавал със своите добродетели. Целия си живот светецът отдал в служба на Бога.
